Riding Confidence

Overcome riding fears & improve competition performance with psychology-backed coaching to rebuild your riding confidence from the inside out.

Overcome your fears and build unshakeable equestrian performance

We love our horses and being a part of the equestrian community, but there’s no denying, it’s hard work too. We care for our equine friends every day – the early starts, the mucking out, constantly checking the weather, wondering whether to rug up or not! Being an equestrian isn’t for the faint-hearted. We are strong and courageous, and yet so often anxiety and fear stops us from enjoying the very reason why we have horses – to ride.

Whether you’re scared to ride your horse after a fall, worried about hacking, struggling with competition nerves, or battling with inconsistent results, the difference between riders who thrive and those who struggle isn’t just talent or more hours in the saddle; it’s about developing the right rider mindset

My combination of psychological expertise and hands-on equestrian experience enables me to help you develop the mental skills that create lasting confidence in the saddle.  As a coach and therapist, with years of experience teaching riders at a variety of levels, alongside a decade of running an equine-assisted therapy and riding centre, I specialise in rebuilding riding confidence using evidence-based psychological approaches.

In addition to my therapeutic expertise, I also hold a diploma in Equine Psychology alongside BHS qualifications, and have taught hundreds of riders to build confidence in the saddle over the years. I truly understand riders and their horses, and from personal experience, know what it is like to overcome riding fears and experience the freedom of breaking free from limitations in the saddle.

challenges for riders Riding Confidence is unique

Riding confidence is a unique challenge because you’re not just managing your mind; you’re also managing the mind of your equine partner, who responds instantly to your mental state. If your confidence wavers, your horse will feel it immediately through your seat, hands, and energy.  Creating a vicious cycle that can be difficult to break. Taking control of your thoughts and feelings, having the ability to relax and focus mind and body in the saddle, makes an incredible difference to your horse and your riding.

Your horse is looking to you to take the lead. When you’re confident, your horse will feel this too. As a result, when we rebuild genuine riding confidence from the inside out, the transformation in both horse and rider is remarkable. You’ll achieve more than you imagined possible, whether you want to enjoy hacking out again, jumping with confidence or riding your best dressage test yet.

it's time to ride Without Fear What's holding you back?

Whether you’re struggling with dressage, show jumping, cross-country, hacking out, or even just mounting your horse, confidence challenges can affect every aspect of your riding.

If you experience any of these issues, you are in the right place:

  • Scared to ride your horse after a fall or bad experience
  • Pre-competition nerves that affect your riding performance
  • Loss of confidence with specific movements or obstacles
  • Inconsistent confidence between home and competitions
  • Overthinking that disrupts your natural riding ability
  • Physical tension that your horse mirrors back to you
  • Perfectionism that creates rigidity instead of flow
  • Anxiety about what judges or spectators think
  • Fear of riding with others, in warm-up or hacking out
  • Irrational fears of getting injured or horse misbehaving
  • Worry about the weather – “it’s too windy/rainy/cold to ride”
  • Fear of cantering in open spaces or hacking out
  • Fear of riding with others, in the arena, warming up or riding out
  • Tell yourself you prefer watching your instructor ride rather than getting on
  • Mental replay of past mistakes affecting current rides
Horse and rider enter the show arena with confidence

riding confidence ahead of the competition Rewire your riding mind.

You know that feeling. The one where everything you’ve practised at home suddenly vanishes as you enter the ring! Your confidence crumbles, despite knowing you and your horse are capable of so much more.

You’re not alone, and it’s not your riding ability that’s the problem. When anxiety creeps in, your horse instantly knows. Tension grows in your body, you forget to breathe, and what starts out as nervousness quickly becomes your horse’s uncertainty, which creates a vicious cycle that affects you both.

Through science-backed psychological techniques specifically adapted for riders, you will learn to:

  • Replace “I can’t” thoughts with confidence that transfers to your horse
  • Develop practical strategies that work in the saddle, not just in theory
  • Identify the specific thought patterns undermining your confidence
  • Build confidence with a plan that won’t overwhelm you
  • Transform show-day nerves into focused energy
  • Build the same mental toolkit that top riders rely on

My clients don’t just feel better, they perform better too. As your confidence grows, your horse responds, which creates an upward spiral of improved performance. Mental freedom transforms into physical results: more expressive movement, relaxation, better scores, and most importantly, the joy of riding without limitations.

Imagine entering the arena feeling centred, confident, and connected to your horse.
That experience is closer than you think.

The arena is merely fencing. It's your mindset that transforms it into a place of possibility.

Riding falling off at a jump

Scared to ride your horse after a fall? You're not alone.

If you’re currently scared to ride your horse after a fall or bad experience, you’re experiencing one of the most common rider challenges. Know that this fear doesn’t define you as a rider. Many of the world’s top equestrians have faced similar challenges and emerged with stronger confidence than before.

Falls can shatter confidence in ways that affect every aspect of your riding, no matter what level you ride or compete.  The fear isn’t just about physical safety – it’s about the loss of trust, both in yourself and in your horse. Your rider mindset shifts from “I can handle this” to “What if it happens again?” This creates a cycle where fear creates tension, and tension affects your riding, which can increase the likelihood of problems.

It’s important to understand that this fear response is completely normal and, more importantly, you can return to riding with confidence and rediscover joy in your riding once again, with the right approach. The key is to approach confidence rebuilding systematically rather than trying to force yourself to “just get over it.” Your rider mindset can be retrained, your confidence can be rebuilt, and your partnership with your horse can become stronger than ever.

Free your mind from doubt, and your horse will show you what freedom really means.

Find your impulsion to ride.

What many riders get wrong about building riding confidence is the need to completely eliminate fear to be a good rider. Instead, it’s about finding your optimal level of alertness while maintaining relaxation and confidence in your riding abilities.

Think of it like the energy in your horse’s gaits. Too little energy and you get a flat, lifeless movement. Too much energy and you get tension, rushing, or loss of control. But just the right amount of impulsion creates power, engagement, and brilliance. Your confidence works the same way.

A healthy respect for your riding and your horse is what psychologists call ‘eustress’, which actually enhances your focus, timing, and feel. It’s that feeling of being alert and engaged that helps you ride your best.

Signs your confidence needs rebuilding:

  • Racing thoughts or mind going blank even before riding
  • Physical tension affecting your seat or hands
  • Catastrophic thinking about falls or mistakes
  • Avoiding certain movements or situations
  • Your horse becoming tense or unresponsive to your aids
  • Dreading rather than anticipating your rides
Happy horse and rider

Imagine if you had unshakeable riding confidence to:

  • Ride with genuine excitement rather than anxiety through systematic confidence-building techniques.
  • Rebuild trust and partnership quickly after setbacks using methods that address fear at its source.
  • Ride with the same confidence at competitions as you do at home with personalised mental preparation routines.
  • Stay present and responsive to your horse rather than caught in worried thoughts through mindful riding techniques.
  • Maintain calm, confident energy that reassures your horse using breathing and body awareness practices.
  • Adapt and flow whilst maintaining your standards through psychological flexibility skills that overcome perfectionism.
  • Approach challenging movements with calm determination using systematic confidence building and visualisation techniques.
  • Focus entirely on your partnership with your horse rather than worrying about the judgment of others.
  • Transform nervous energy into positive riding energy that enhances rather than hinders your equestrian performance.
  • Set riding goals and achieve them with more motivation and resilience.

The distance between ordinary riding and extraordinary partnership is measured in moments of mental clarity.

rider success coaching

the evidence-based approach to building lasting riding confidence

Building genuine riding confidence requires more than just “getting back on the horse.” It involves systematically addressing the psychological patterns that create fear while developing new neural pathways that support confident riding.

As an Integrative Psychotherapist and Coach, I use the most effective approach tailored for you. Combining Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy (CBH), Mindfulness and future-focused coaching.

These evidence-based techniques include:

  • Cognitive restructuring – changing the worried thoughts that create physical tension and undermine confidence
  • Systematic desensitisation – gradually rebuilding comfort with challenging situations at your own pace
  • Mindfulness training – developing present-moment awareness that enhances feel, timing, and confidence
  • Visualisation techniques – mental rehearsal that builds confidence and positive muscle memory
  • Breathing and relaxation methods – tools to maintain optimal confidence levels without tension
  • Progressive exposure – safely rebuilding confidence step by step

Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy (CBH) is particularly effective for riding confidence. This isn’t stage hypnosis or mind control; it’s a relaxed, focused state where your mind is more receptive to positive change. Many riders find CBH helps them overcome deep-seated fears and install new confident responses more quickly than traditional talking therapies alone. It’s especially powerful for addressing the automatic fear responses that can happen when competing, jumping, or in specific riding situations you may be struggling to overcome.

My systematic approach to building riding confidence is backed by psychological research and addresses both the psychological and physical aspects of fear and anxiety to create lasting change that improves your entire equestrian performance.

frequently asked questions

My equestrian performance coaching combines proven psychological techniques alongside specialised equestrian knowledge to address the mental and emotional aspects of riding. Unlike traditional riding instruction that focuses primarily on physical skills, our coaching targets the mental barriers that so often limit rider performance and enjoyment, such as anxiety, fear, competition nerves, and confidence issues.

Regular riding lessons typically focus on technical skills, position, and training of your horse. Our coaching complements traditional lessons by addressing the mental aspects that often prevent riders from applying their skills effectively. While your riding instructor teaches you what to do, we help ensure your mind allows you to do it, especially under pressure.

“Pushing through” fear often reinforces anxiety because it doesn’t address the underlying thought patterns or provide proper tools for managing the physiological stress response. Our approach uses evidence-based techniques that gradually retrain your brain’s response to triggers, creating sustainable confidence rather than temporary bravery.

Most riders notice shifts in their thinking and emotional responses within the first 2-3 sessions. Measurable improvements in riding performance typically begin after 4-6 weeks of consistent practice with the techniques. Complete transformation may take longer depending on your specific challenges, but each step builds upon the last.

Absolutely. Whether you compete at high levels or simply want to enjoy relaxed hacking without anxiety, the principles remain the same. Many of our clients are leisure riders who want to rebuild confidence after falls or simply enjoy their horses without the limitations that fear creates.

Yes. Instructors frequently comment on the visible changes in their students who undergo coaching. Common observations include: better focus during lessons, increased willingness to try new challenges, improved body position due to reduced tension, and more consistent performances. I am happy to discuss any challenges with your regular instructor to maximise benefits.

I offer flexibility based on your needs and location. Options include:

  • In-person sessions at your yard or at my office in North Warwickshire.

  • Online video coaching

  • Combined approach with both remote sessions and periodic in-person support.

  • Our initial consultation will help determine the most effective format for your situation.

While I tailor each program to you, a typical journey includes:

  1. Comprehensive assessment of your specific challenges and goals

  2. Development of your personalised mental toolkit

  3. Implementation of techniques in progressively challenging riding scenarios

  4. Integration of new mental habits into your regular riding routine

  5. Maintenance strategies to sustain your progress

Yes! Group workshops can be arranged for riding clubs, competition teams, or informal groups of friends with similar goals. Group sessions provide both cost-effective coaching and the added benefit of peer support through the process. However, for specific challenges, individual coaching is recommended.
