Cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy:
the evidence-based approach to lasting change

cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy

Imagine the possibilities.

Imagine if you could practice confidence before your biggest presentation, rehearse calm responses to anxiety-provoking situations, or train your brain to process pain differently. All in the safety of your own mind.

You already possess this remarkable ability. Every time you get lost in a good book, when your heart races during the movie chase scene, if you imagine biting into a lemon and your mouth waters, or when you replay a memory so vividly that you feel the emotions all over again, you’re demonstrating the extraordinary power of your mind. I’m here to guide you through this transformative process.

Your brain doesn’t distinguish between vividly imagined experiences and real ones. This isn’t just fascinating psychology; it’s the foundation for profound transformation.

Cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy (CBH) is a scientifically-backed approach that harnesses your mind’s natural ability to create lasting change through focused mental practice. Not stage tricks or mysterious trances, but a natural, learnable psychological skill that amplifies your innate capacity for growth and healing.

Are you ready to move beyond your challenges and start creating a new reality?

Evidence-Based Therapy for Real Change

The science behind hypnosis

As a member of the British Psychological Society,  approved the cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy training I completed, and the approach itself is grounded in extensive research, not mysticism. This evidence-based approach to cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy ensures you receive scientifically validated treatment.

The breakthrough came when researchers realised hypnosis works best when combined with cognitive behavioural techniques. Kirsch’s influential 1995 meta-analysis showed that adding hypnosis to CBT substantially enhances treatment outcomes compared to CBT alone.

The magic isn’t in the hypnosis itself. It’s in teaching your brain to practice new patterns before you need them in real life.
Think about it: athletes visualise perfect performances. Musicians mentally rehearse complex pieces. Your brain treats these mental rehearsals as real practice sessions, strengthening the neural pathways for success.
Cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy takes this natural process and applies it therapeutically, creating lasting behavioural change through structured mental practice.

What actually happens in your mind during hypnosis

Forget everything you think you know about being in a “trance”, some form of “altered” state or losing control. In cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy, you’re learning focused attention. The same state you enter when completely absorbed in a movie or book. Researchers call this monoideism – single-pointed focus.

All hypnosis is self-hypnosis. As your therapist, I am your coach, guiding you to access a natural psychological state you already experience daily. You don’t need to be ‘highly hypnotisable’ to benefit. Because depth of hypnosis doesn’t correlate with effectiveness, virtually anyone can benefit therapeutically. What’s more, hypnosis is a learnable skill rather than a fixed trait.  What matters is your willingness to engage with the process.

The Power of Suggestion

During our sessions, we start with simple exercises that demonstrate your mind’s natural responsiveness. Here’s the reframe that changes everything: you’re already using this power against yourself. Every time you replay worst-case scenarios, your body responds with real stress hormones and physiological responses. When you tell yourself, “I’m terrible at presentations,” your brain accepts that as truth.

Cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy teaches you to become intentional about your thoughts and focus. Instead of accidentally practising anxiety, you practice confidence. Instead of reinforcing limiting beliefs, you strengthen empowering ones.

How CBH is a unique integrated approach to therapy

Here’s what makes cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy truly distinctive: it’s not separate therapies combined, it’s a completely integrated approach. Where CBT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness, and hypnosis work together seamlessly.

In cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy, we work with thoughts, behaviours, values, and present-moment awareness and use the power of hypnosis. This isn’t about relaxation or suggestion alone. It’s about accessing a focused state of attention to examine thinking patterns, practice psychological flexibility, cultivate mindful awareness, and rehearse new responses with unprecedented clarity.

In hypnosis, you’re not just intellectually understanding the process – you’re embodying it. Your nervous system learns what it feels like to choose a different response. You’re literally rehearsing being the person who thinks and behaves differently.

We work collaboratively, together in partnership, directly on your goals and help you to take real action to reach them. Where we integrate:

• CBT techniques – Thought challenging and behavioural experiments
• ACT principles – Values clarification and psychological flexibility
• Mindfulness practices – Present-moment awareness + acceptance
• Coaching – to support your future goals
• Hypnotic techniques – Mental rehearsal and embodied learning

Why cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy is so effective

It’s important to understand that hypnotherapy, on its own, isn’t a standalone therapy. Hypnosis is a state of focused attention: it’s what we do within that state that creates the therapeutic benefit.

Some practitioners might use hypnosis for simple relaxation or positive suggestions. Whilst these can be helpful, they don’t address the underlying cognitive and behavioural patterns that maintain problems.

This is why cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy is so effective: it delivers robust evidence-based therapeutic techniques within the enhanced learning state of hypnosis, creating lasting change that integrates naturally into daily life.

This integration means you get:

• Deeper insight – You can observe your thinking patterns with unusual clarity
• Emotional regulation – The hypnotic state naturally reduces anxiety and reactivity
• Enhanced learning – New patterns are absorbed more readily
• Embodied change – You practice new responses until they feel natural
• Lasting integration – Change happens at a psychological and physiological level

This is the transformation we’ll work toward together.

a transformative therapeutic experience

How cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy can help you

There is a strong evidence base for cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy that spans multiple conditions. CBH can also support your personal development and you do not have to be Green’s 2005 meta-analysis confirmed its effectiveness for chronic pain management. Research demonstrates significant benefit for the treatment of anxiety.

We don’t just talk about these challenges – we practice new responses until they become automatic. Your brain learns through experience, and CBH provides that experience safely, repeatedly, until change becomes natural.

Each condition requires a tailored approach, combining specific CBT techniques with personalised hypnotic interventions. The result is lasting change that extends far beyond our sessions together. This personalised approach to cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy ensures that every client receives treatment specifically designed for their unique needs and goals.

frequently asked questions

A typical CBH session begins with psychoeducation about the approach and your specific concerns. We then use hypnotic skills training to help you develop your ability to respond to suggestions. Once you’re in a focused, relaxed state, we engage in active therapeutic work – this might involve examining thought patterns, practising new responses to triggers, or rehearsing confident behaviours. You remain aware and in control throughout, actively participating in the process rather than being a passive recipient.

The duration of therapy varies depending on your specific goals and the complexity of your situation. For addressing specific issues like insomnia or mild anxiety, 6-8 sessions often create significant improvement. For more complex or longstanding issues, 12-16 sessions may be recommended. We’ll discuss timeline expectations during your initial assessment and regularly review progress.

This varies depending on your individual needs and goals. Some people notice improvements after just a few sessions, whilst others benefit from longer-term work. We’ll discuss your specific situation during our initial consultation and regularly review progress. The beauty of CBH is that you’re learning skills you can continue using independently between sessions and beyond our work together.

Research consistently shows that online therapy can be just as effective as in-person therapy for most conditions. For some clients, the comfort of their own environment actually enhances the therapeutic experience. The addition of the “Your Mind Works” app provides continuous support between sessions, which many clients find accelerates their progress compared to traditional weekly therapy alone.

Yes, CBH can be effectively delivered online. The hypnotic state is actually easier to achieve in your own comfortable environment. Online sessions include the same therapeutic components as in-person work, and you’ll still have access to all the digital resources and between-session support through the app.

Traditional hypnotherapy often relies on direct suggestions or relaxation techniques. CBH integrates evidence-based therapeutic approaches (CBT, ACT, mindfulness) within the hypnotic state. Rather than just giving suggestions, we actively work with your thoughts, behaviours, and values whilst you’re in focused attention. This creates deeper, more lasting change because you’re practicing new patterns in an optimal learning state.

The initial assessment is comprehensive but conversational. We’ll discuss what brings you to therapy, relevant background information, and your goals. I’ll ask questions to understand your unique situation, and you’ll have the opportunity to ask questions about my approach. By the end, we’ll have a clearer direction for our work together and initial recommendations.

My integrated approach combines evidence-based methods with personalized application, focusing on both understanding patterns and creating practical change. The addition of the “Your Mind Works” app provides continuous support between sessions, which significantly enhances the therapeutic process and helps create lasting change more efficiently than traditional weekly therapy alone.

CBH has strong evidence for helping with various conditions including chronic pain, anxiety disorders, sleep difficulties, and stress-related issues. However, it’s important to understand that CBH works alongside, not instead of, appropriate medical care. For physical health conditions, you should always consult your GP or specialist first. CBH can be an excellent complement to medical treatment, particularly for the psychological aspects of health conditions.

This is based on a misconception about hypnosis. You already experience hypnotic states naturally – when you’re absorbed in a book, daydreaming, or completely focused on a task. CBH uses these natural abilities therapeutically. We provide skills training to help you develop your responsiveness, and remember – you don’t need to achieve deep hypnotic states to benefit therapeutically.

Additionally, you do not have to be highly hypnotisable. Research shows that only light to medium responsiveness is needed for therapeutic benefit, and hypnotic ability isn’t fixed – it’s a learnable skill that improves with practice. We focus on building your confidence and skills rather than testing your ‘hypnotisability’. The depth of hypnosis doesn’t correlate with therapeutic effectiveness – what matters is your willingness to engage with the process.

Yes, extensive research supports CBH’s effectiveness. Kirsch’s landmark 1995 meta-analysis showed that adding hypnosis to CBT substantially enhances treatment outcomes by approximately 70% compared to CBT alone. Studies demonstrate CBH’s effectiveness for depression, anxiety disorders, chronic pain, and many other conditions. The approach is approved by professional bodies including training programmes endorsed by the British Psychological Society.

Most people feel relaxed and often report greater clarity about their patterns and goals. You might notice increased awareness of your thoughts and responses in daily situations. Some people experience immediate shifts, whilst others notice gradual changes over time. You’ll have access to recordings and exercises through the ‘Your Mind Works’ app to support your progress between session

Whilst relaxation is part of the process, CBH requires your active participation, so staying alert and engaged is important. If you do drift off occasionally, that’s perfectly normal – we can adjust the approach to help you maintain the optimal level of focused attention. The goal is relaxed awareness, not sleep.

Absolutely not. One of the first tasks in CBH is reassuring clients that they won’t be under the type of control they might imagine from stage shows. All hypnosis is self-hypnosis – you’re always in control and can’t be made to do anything against your will. The therapist is simply your coach, guiding you to access a natural psychological state you already experience daily when absorbed in activities like reading or watching films.
