Therapy vs coaching? Which one is best for you?
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the endless options, therapy vs coaching, life coaching or business coaching – you’re not alone. As an entrepreneur, you’re already juggling countless decisions daily. The last thing you need is confusion about where to turn when you’re struggling with stress, anxiety, or simply want to perform at your best.
Let’s explore the differences and which option is best for you, as well as the reasons why professional standards matter.
The Regulation Gap
Anyone can call themselves a coach today, no license required, no formal education needed and no regulatory oversight.
Welcome to the $20 billion global coaching industry.
I’ve watched the coaching space explode while therapy remains heavily regulated. The contrast is staggering, and it’s leaving many entrepreneurs uncertain about what type of support they actually need.
Therapists complete years of training, answer to professional governing bodies and uphold strict ethical standards and continuing education requirements.
Coaches face none of these requirements.
Yet both work with vulnerable people seeking transformation. Both influence mental health outcomes, and both charge similar fees.
The difference lies in accountability and evidence-based practice.
To be clear, there are many excellent coaches with extensive training, years of experience, and memberships with professional organisations like the International Coaching Federation (ICF). These practitioners maintain high standards and deliver genuine value.
However, the lack of mandatory regulation means the vast majority of coaches can practice without any formal qualifications, supervised training, or ongoing professional development. This creates a confusing landscape where highly skilled professionals work alongside complete novices – all using the same title.
When Entrepreneurs Suffer in Silence
The stakes couldn’t be higher for entrepreneurs like you. This is why I’m passionate about supporting entrepreneurs and business leaders. Research shows 87.7% of entrepreneurs globally experience mental health challenges. Anxiety affects 72% and stress impacts 68% of business owners. In the UK, research by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) found that 76% of small business owners experienced mental health issues in the past year, with work-related stress being the leading cause. Nearly half of entrepreneurs describe their mental health as “bad” or “very bad.”
When it comes to getting help, the data reveals concerning patterns. While therapy shows higher success rates for clinical conditions, studies show 75-80% effectiveness for anxiety and depression treatment. Many entrepreneurs are turning to unregulated coaching instead.
If you’re an entrepreneur, these numbers might feel all too familiar. The isolation of decision-making, the weight of responsibility for other people’s livelihoods, the constant uncertainty. These aren’t character flaws or signs of weakness. They are a natural human response to the unique pressures of entrepreneurship.
But only 23% seek professional help globally, while UK data shows even lower rates – with many entrepreneurs turning to unregulated coaching instead of accessing NHS mental health services or private therapy.
Many turn to coaches instead of therapists, often without understanding the critical differences. This choice can delay necessary treatment or provide inadequate support during crisis moments.
Evidence-Based Practice Changes Everything
Here’s what surprised me most in recent research: 58% of people with depression symptoms experienced clinical recovery after working with coaches trained in evidence-based approaches – remarkably similar to traditional therapy outcomes. However, this only applied to coaches with proper training. Studies show that while licensed therapists maintain consistent 75-80% success rates for anxiety and depression, unregulated coaches show widely varying results, from 20% to 70% effectiveness depending on their training and experience, which means it can be a bit of a gamble with your time, money and mental health.
The key phrase is: evidence-based approaches.
My practice integrates Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness and Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy (CBH). These aren’t trendy techniques or buzzwords. They’re scientifically validated methods with robust scientific evidence. As a coaching psychologist and integrative psychotherapist, I’ve completed training programmes accredited by the British Psychological Society, which ensures the quality and evidence base of the education – the science itself validates these methods.
When I work with entrepreneurs – whether in person or online – every intervention has research backing its effectiveness. Every technique has proven outcomes. My clients also receive access to my Your Mind Works app, providing them with personalised resources and support tools between our sessions.
Choosing Your Support Wisely
The question becomes: how do you choose?
Consider therapy when you’re dealing with:
– Anxiety, depression, or trauma
– Persistent mental health symptoms
– Past experiences affecting current functioning
– Need for clinical assessment and treatment
Consider coaching when you’re seeking:
– Performance enhancement
– Goal achievement
– Skill development
– Forward-focused growth
The overlap exists in evidence-based approaches. But there’s a third option that bridges both worlds: coaching psychology. As a coaching psychologist, I combine the rigorous scientific foundation of psychology with coaching’s goal-oriented approach. Unlike general coaching, coaching psychology is grounded in psychological theory and research, focusing on enhancing performance and well-being for non-clinical populations. It’s a distinct professional area that bridges therapeutic insight with forward-focused development, offering the best of both worlds with proper professional oversight.
The Professional Standard You Deserve
Your mental health deserves professional standards. Whether you choose therapy or coaching, ask about training, credentials, and evidence-based methods.
Look for practitioners who can explain their approach, cite research, and demonstrate ongoing professional development.
The unregulated coaching industry creates risk. But evidence-based practitioners in both fields create genuine transformation.
You deserve support that meets the highest professional standards. Your wellbeing depends on it.
If you’re ready to experience the difference that evidence-based, professionally guided support can make in your entrepreneurial journey, I’d love to work with you. As a coaching psychologist with deep understanding of both the psychological science and the entrepreneurial experience, I offer the professional standards and genuine transformation you deserve.
Whether you’re seeking therapy for mental health challenges or coaching psychology for performance enhancement, I work with clients both in person and online – though I particularly love the flexibility that online sessions offer, allowing me to support entrepreneurs wherever they are in the world.
